The goal is to reduce adverse events due to human error. The crew may also have other training specific to the type of equipment on their particular an airplane, for example, night vision goggles.

Medical personnel sometimes have a wide scope of practice. An example of this is paramedics or nurses who are capable of placing chest tubes.

This is often necessary to effectively treat sick person who are far from the definitive care they may need.

Advantages and disadvantages

Land transportation is limited by factors such as road availability, road conditions and traffic. Ground transportation also travels much slower than air transportation, especially when compared to fixed-wing Airplanes.

However, there are also disadvantages of air transportation. These losses may be common to both fixed-wing and rotor-wing airplane or specific to each type,emergency medical.

Common losses are incremental cost that depends on many factors such as crew, an airplane type, and transportation distance.

The cost of operating air dical transfer is also very high as an airplane itself can cost several million dollars, and maintenance is very tightly regulated.

Air transportation is more sensitive to weather conditions than ground transportation, typically more so in rotor-wing Airplanes.

Weight also has to be calculated carefully because engines are only capable of producing a limited amount of power.

Another disadvantage of air transfer is that it is inherently more dangerous than ground transfer , especially helicopter transfer.

There is no specific data that directly compare air transportation with ground transportation. However, some studies look at each individually.

In the 20 years between 1992 and 2011, there were approximately 4,500 ambulance accidents.

29 of these accidents resulted in fatal injuries. In the 10 years between 1998 and 2008, there were 146 helicopter accidents, and 50 (34%) of these resulted in fatal injuries.

This tells us that air transfer accidents are more fatal than ground accidents. Fixed-wing accidents also have almost the same percentage of fatal accidents.

An aircraft may have one engine or multiple engines. Helicopters usually have 1 or 2 engines. With 2 engines, a helicopter can carry more weight and travel faster. However, they also use more fuel which increases the cost. They also cost more to maintain. Airplanes usually have more than one engine because typical single-engine airplanes are not large or powerful enough to carry crew and essential equipment in addition to the patient. Having more than one engine also increases the safety factor as 1 engine can fail and the aircraft still has a working engine that can be used to land safely.
